Reflection: Our project was a learning experience for me. Not only was I aware of the living conditions in the poorer areas of Asia and Africa, but I was shocked by the lack of food and water in these areas. After learning about these places this project began to mean a lot more to me. We first thought about going to the other countries and teaching the citizens how to create a sustainable food resource. We then realized that it would cost too much money to send over trained professionals to help them. We decided to make a resource kit that they could use by themselves to grow and produce food. After this idea was fully agreed on we set to work making the lightest most efficient kit to do the job. Two things that I think our group did well were cooperation when we gathered data and agreeing on the size and contents of the bag. Two things our group could work on are cooperation during our oral report and empathy (one pupil in our group did not exactly take disagreements well).
Summary: Our project was to design and create a bag that has all of the required materials to build a small garden that can feed a family of four for multiple weeks. It is 20 cm. by 10 cm. and contains nitrogen fertilizer, a small shovel, an instruction manual and seeds. It was designed so that you can used nearly any type of soil and even cow poop to grow the seeds as long as there is nitrogen fertilizer in it. You can use the shovel to carry already grown plants or turn the dirt. The instruction manual is also mainly pictures so we do not have to make it in multiple languages.
Terms:
This project contained no main terms. Our group did use the Engineering Design Cycle to create our project. This includes thinking of a design. Finding out all of the problems and then creating it again until it is correct. We also used critical thinking, problem solving and time management.
